Emission altitude in radio pulsars
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a method of estimation of emission altitudes using observational data-precise measurements of pulse profile widths at low intensity level. The analysis of emission altitudes obtained using this method for a large number of pulsars gives constraints that should be useful for theory of coherent pulsar emission. It seems that radio emission originates at altitudes of about few percent of the light cylinder and that they depend on frequency ν, pulsar period P and period derivative ˙ P .

Pulsar shadow as the origin of double notches in radio pulse profiles
We present the model of eclipsing a rotating, spatially extended source of directional emission by a central absorber, and apply it to the pulsar magnetosphere. The model assumes the radially extended inward radio emission along the local direction of the magnetic field, and the pulsar as the absorber. The geometry of the magnetic field lines of the rotating dipole is favourable for the double ...
متن کاملOff-beam Gamma-ray Pulsars and Unidentified Egret Sources in the Gould Belt
We investigate whether gamma-ray pulsars viewed at a large angle to the neutron star magnetic pole could contribute to the new population of galactic unidentified EGRET sources associated with the Gould Belt. The faint, soft nature of these sources is distinctly different from both the properties of unidentified EGRET sources along the galactic plane and of the known gamma-ray pulsars. We explo...
متن کاملPhase Offsets between Core and Conal Components of Radio Pulsars and Their Emission Altitudes
We present a new and a potentially powerful method for investigating emission altitudes of radio pulsar core and conal components by attributing them different altitudes. We provide a framework for a systematic understanding of resulting longitude offsets between them which are frequently observed. By investigating the contributions to these offsets due to aberration and the magnetic field line...
متن کاملPositron-Cyclotron Maser for the Core Emissions from Pulsars
We use the cyclotron-maser theory to explain the core emission from the magnetosphere of pulsars. As a kind of direct and efficient maser type of emission, it can give rise to escaping radiation with extremely high brightness temperature and narrow angle with respect to the magnetic axis. We find that the growth rates and real frequencies of the O-mode electromagnetic wave propagating parallel ...
متن کاملAltitude-dependent polarization in radio pulsars
Because of the corotation, the polarization angle (PA) curve of a pulsar lags the intensity profile by 4r/Rlc rad in pulse phase. I present a simple and short derivation of this delay-radius relation to show that it is not caused by the aberration (understood as the normal beaming effect) but purely by contribution of corotation to the electron acceleration in the observer’s frame. Available al...
